The Departed is the latest film getting rebooted for the small screen.
Amazon is developing an adaptation of the Oscar-winning 2006 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The hourlong drama hails from Amazon Studios, Vertigo Entertainment, Initial Entertainment Group and Plan B Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. TV. Similar in premise to both The Departed and the 2002 Hong Kong film Internal Affairs on which it is based, the project centers on a young cop who goes undercover to infiltrate a ruthless Latino gang, which simultaneously plants its own man in the police department. Set in present-day Chicago amidst the shifting tides of warring ethnic drug gangs, the gritty, suspenseful drama follows these two embattled moles as they attempt to fulfill their mission and stay alive.

Jason Richman (Mercy Street, Detroit 1-8-7) is penning the adaptation and will exec produce with Roy Lee, Michael Connolly, Graham King, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Sarah Esberg, Tripp Vinson, Doug Davison and Gianni Nunnari. Lee first revealed that a possible TV adaptation of the film was in the works back in February.
The 2006 movie, directed by Martin Scorsese, took in more than $132 million in the U.S. and $289 million worldwide. The film was nominated for six Oscars and took home best director honors for Scorsese.
The Departed is just the latest in a long string of movies to be adapted for the small screen. This upcoming season will see the arrival of reboots such as Lethal Weapon and The Exorcist on Fox, as well as Training Day on CBS and Taken on NBC.
At Amazon, the project comes as the streamer continues to beef up on original series. It just unveiled three pilots on Friday, including a reboot of The Tick and Jill Soloway’s I Love Dick, for viewers to vote on. In October, the streamer will launch the David E. Kelley legal drama Goliath, starring Billy Bob Thornton, which was the first Amazon original to earn a straight-to-series order.
